February   23rd (Thursday)    A Special Talk & Tour with Matt Whittiker of Green Haven Plant Farm in Carthage, grower of hydroponic lettuce sold at Fresh Market and other grocery stores.  Meet at Green Haven at 10am.  (Take 15-501 toward Carthage.  Turn right on Rt 22.  1/4 mile turn left on to Green Haven Lane.  A sign is at the road). Learn how hydroponic lettuce is grown while taking a tour of the growing facility in Carthage. Each person will receive a head of hydroponic lettuce. $15.00 Horticultural Society members, $20.00 non-members.  Payment due at Registration.

March 13th (Monday)  Lunch & Learn in the Gardens with Jean Walker, Moore County coordinator for the North Carolina Bluebird Society - FREE - 12 N to 1 PM.  It’s time for bluebirds to start choosing their nesting area.  Jean will give you tips on how to attract bluebirds, where to locate your nest box, incubation to fledgling days -- and MORE.  Bring your lunch & the Gardens will provide drinks.  Sandhills Horticultural Gardens-Ball Visitors Center.  Register by email: landscapegardening@sandhills.edu

March 30th (Thursday) Planting an Earth Box with Master Gardener Bruce Fensley (10AM – Noon, Sandhills Horticultural Gardens – Ball Visitor Center.  If your gardening space is currently limited to a deck or patio and you still would like to grow some vegetables, herbs or flowers, using an Earth Box may be a good option.  This will be a demonstration using 2 Earth Boxes.  Bruce will plant one with veggies/herbs and another with flowers.  You’ll learn what veggies/herbs are compatible w/each other in a limited space (and in your garden), along with what soil and nutrients work best.  Participants will take home an Ace Hardware discount coupon that includes: an Earth Box, a bag of raised bed soil/growing medium and selection of plants that they choose to put in their Earth Box.  $10 Horticulture Society members, $15 non-members.  All must pre-pay to secure your place in class.  Payment due at registration.

April  8th (Saturday)  Sandhills Horticultural Society Plant Sale.  The Sandhills Horticultural Society will hold its spring plant sale from 8 AM to noon.  Perennials, woody plants and bulbs will be for sale at the new horticultural building area (Steed Hall) of Sandhills Community College.  For information or to per-order call 910-695-3882.  

April 18th (Tuesday) Flower Arranging with Tim Ward and Leslie Habets from South Street (formerly Aldena’s on South) 10AM – Noon, Sandhills Horticulture Gardens – Ball Visitor Center.  Tim and Leslie will be giving a “hands on” workshop, creating an arrangement using early spring blooms and greenery.  They will help participants personalize each arrangement to express their own personality.  Materials include  vase, flowers and greenery.  Bring your own cutting tool(s).  $45 Horticulture Society members, $55 non-members.  All must pre-pay to secure your place in class.  Payment due at registration. Class is limited to 30.

April 21 & 22 (Friday - Saturday) Annual Bedding Plant Sale for the Benefit of Student's Educational Field Trip. Friday between 1 & 5PM, Sat. 9 AM to 12 Noon at Steed Hall (Landscape Gardening Building) Annuals, herbs, tomato & pepper plants available. Order forms available January 31st at Ball Visitors Center or order by phone 910-695-3883 /3882. April 24th (Monday)  Lunch & learn in the Gardens with JJ Faulk of JJ's Place Greenhouse & Nursery in Sanford.  Annuals & Perennials in the Landscape - FREE

May 5th (Friday)  Planting summer annuals "hands on" workshop w/instructors Linda Hamwi & Dolores Muller.  10 AM - 12 Noon Steed Hall, Sandhills Community College campus.  Participants will be planting a unique 14" coated wire cauldron that can be used as a hanging basket or stand on its legs on your patio!  Very versatile, this is a piece you will re-use for years to come.  Price includes all materials - cauldron w/liner, soil, fertilizer & your choice of plants from Linda's "mini nursery"!  Horticulture Society members $80, non-members $90.  Space is limited.  All must pre-pay to secure your place in class.  Payment due at registration. 

May 22nd (Monday) Lunch & learn in the Gardens with Pete Gulley of Gulley's Nursery in Southern Pines.  Happenings in your garden in the month of May - FREE - 12 PM to 1 PM.  Bring your lunch & the Garden will provide drinks.  Sandhills Horticultural Gardens-Ball Visitors Center.  Register by email: landscapegardening@sandhills.edu

June 8th (Thursday) Growing garlic with Norma Burns.  10 AM - 12 Noon, Sandhills Horticulture Gardens, Ball Visitor Center.  Norma will teach you how to plant, grow and harvest garlic, along with a "hands on" cooking demonstration.  $15 Horticulture Society members, $20 non members.  All must pre-pay to secure your place in class.  Payment due at registration.

June 16th (Friday) Cement Leaf Birdbath with Pat Banville.  10 AM - 12 Noon (possible afternoon workshop also, if needed), outside Steed Hall, Sandhills Community College.  Instructor Pat Banville will show participants how to create a cement bird bath in the shape of a leaf.  All materials will be supplied. Horticulture Society members $25, non members $35.  Space is limited.  All must pre-pay to secure your place in class.  Payment due at registration.  This class filled up last year, so sign up early!

June 26th (Monday) Lunch & learn in the Gardens with Tim Emmert from Sandhills Farm to Table - FREE - 12 N to 1 PM.   Learn about the challenges & opportunities of running a regional multi-farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) & more.  Bring your lunch & the Garden will provide drinks.  Sandhills Horticultural Gardens-Ball Visitor Center.  Register by email: landscapegardening@sandhills.edu

July 20th (Thursday) Finger painting with flowers, instructor Magda Sonderfan, 10 AM - 12 Noon, Sandhills Horticulture Gardens, Ball Visitor Center.  Details to be announced.

July 24th (Monday) Lunch & learn in the Gardens with Jon Davis from Wild Birds Unlimited in Southern Pines.  Tips on how to attract more birds to your backyard
